Nereids

Wow! After my last update, I received a surprising number of “Did I miss something? What is Nereids? Where can I find it?” questions. I thought I did a pretty good job of communicating through the Forum and my mailing list, but I didn’t realize I had such a sizable minority of people who don’t read either. No worries. Now that I know, I’ll do a better job of getting the word out.

Without further ado, here’s the working teaser for Nereids:

Jack MacLean is happy with married life, but he wants to have sex with other women. And the thought of his wife having sex with another man is a powerful image. Can he actually watch her do it, though? And will she let him have sex with another woman?

It might not matter, since Jack and his squadron will soon be fighting a war in the skies over Vietnam. But he and his best friend, David Hughes, are determined to survive everything the enemy and their own government can throw at them.

In the meantime, Beth Hughes is dealing with her own problems on the home front, from politics among the squadron wives to raising children while her husband is thousands of miles away. But she has a new best friend, Susan MacLean, and the two of them grow closer than sisters.

Set against the backdrop of the Swinging Sixties and the Vietnam War, Nereids is the story of two couples dealing with love and loss, friendship and loneliness, discovery and heartache. Will their relationship survive? Will it turn into more?

Read the exciting prequel to Summer Camp, and learn how it all began.

I’ve been working on Nereids since November of last year, although I took a decent break through the holidays. The story is a full-sized novel, about 120,000 words (12 chapters). It’s not as long as my Summer Camp books, but I spoiled you with them.

The illustrated novel will debut on Ruthie’s Club (a pay site) in the July 3rd issue. After the exclusivity period with RC, it will appear on all the free sites: my own site, ASSTR, SOL, etc. (In addition, this is the first major story I will publish on Literotica, which has a huge readership of potential Scipio addicts.)

While Ruthie’s normally pays their authors, I’m not getting paid for Nereids. Why? The site’s founder, Ruthie herself, was a close friend in real life. She died in June 2004, and the book is my last gift to her and her legacy. I’m sure she would have enjoyed it.

My reality team has given it good reviews, so I’m really looking forward to its debut. I think you’ll enjoy it, but you’ll have to read to find out. ;-)

So, that’s the story of what I’ve been up to for the past six months. When I finish Nereids, I’ll take a short break and then start writing SC-B4.

Enjoy. - Nick

* And since most people aren’t Greek mythology buffs, I’ll go ahead and answer the inevitable question: “What the heck is a Nereid?

    Oh, cool.

I had never realized that Nereids was in the SC universe.

  2. Steve on June 19th, 2006 2:50 am

*Some* of us, of course, simply fed “Nereids” into Google as soon as we saw it. ;-) Well, OK, maybe that was just me! :)

That teaser came out at almost 200 words Nick, are you still working on getting them down to 100 or less?

(FWIW I like it the way it is. Genuinely teasing.)

    Steve.

  3. Barb on June 19th, 2006 7:31 am

    WayCool!

I look forward to reading it. Perhaps it will keep my mind occupied while we await ‘Christy”.

No, I am NOT going to pester you - First, I know it pisses you off, and, second, I can tell the difference between a hurry-up hack job, and the masterpieces you create. Patience is a virtue.

    My heart does hunger, though.

    Love ‘n all, and thanks,

    -b-

  4. John on June 19th, 2006 9:03 am

I’ll agree, that you definitely spoiled us with the SC books’ lengths. And, we really, really, REALLY appreciate it! :)

  5. Robert on June 19th, 2006 2:11 pm

    Nick,

I think a pre-quel is an excellent idea, and I hope you take all the time you need to make it worthy of the rest of your writings. I truly enjoy your writing, and the effort you have taken to publish a polished product is shown in the finished masterpiece. If you weren’t writing “adult” fiction on the web, you’d be on the New York Times bestsellers list.

One question: In Nereids, when/if you cover the time period of David Hughes death, are you going to incorporate the character of James Smith, in Sir Winston’s story “The Journey”?

  6. Dave W. on June 22nd, 2006 1:40 am

Actually Robert, I think you mean “Jack MacLean’s death”, since David Hughes is Paul Hughes’ father from the Summer Camp books, and David is very much “alive”… or at least as alive as any fictional character is, and Nick’s characters are rather more alive than most.

“Patiently waiting” ??? Oh, that was a good one.

Heheh, the world would be a wonderful place if it weren’t for all the people!

    Luv ya, Nick!

  12. Tom on June 24th, 2006 10:26 am

    Nick,
Now that fuckwit was funny. Makes my comments about WEB Griffien, Tom Clancy and sagging and a dragging, seem rather innocuous. Clickty Clack Claickty Clack. Sound of a buckling spring keyboard at work.

  14. Adune on June 25th, 2006 3:02 am

I’m one of the folks that doesn’t read your forum. While I have in the past, the thread style of it is quite cumbersome to read properly. Additionally, yahoo groups are a bit of a pain in the butt.

Nice job on starting a Wordpress Blog. Have you considered setting up a PHPbb forum?

  15. Barb on June 26th, 2006 7:12 am

Nick, My Old, If I may be so forward, perhaps a permanent ban for this bloody idiot.

Jack, perhaps you should, how shoud I say this, er .. RETHINK you position on this matter. Nick is pouring his SOUL into something that YOU are getting free. Gratis. You contribute NADA, and have the audacity to piss and moan. FOAD.

If she is giving you a hundred dollar bill, do you whine about how long it takes you Mother to open her purse?

I’m straining at the bit, just like everyone else. If you cannot appreciate the gift, go away and bother someone else.

Now, back to our regularly schedulled rant…

  16. Gerald on June 26th, 2006 7:35 pm

Nick - I’ve not written before, but I wanted to say that I’ve really, really enjoyed Summer Camp. A big thanks!

Jack - chill out man…. go put your feet up, have a mojito, take a nap… or something… :-)

  17. Phil on June 26th, 2006 8:27 pm

After reading Jack’s comments I couldn’t help but think about two quotes from two special women I hold dear to my heart.

Mom has often said over the years, “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.”

The second and most recent is from my dear wife. I’d just finished reading Jack’s post when she came bursting through the door ranting about her awful day at work. On and on she vented until abruptly stopping to glare at me and growl, “Why do you find this so fucking funny?!” Then she pivoted, marched down the hall, and all but slammed the bedroom door off its hinges.

Nick, thanks for sharing Jack’s post. I think.

    Phil

PS. I’ve been a fan for over two years. Thank you, young man, for all the great writing! Better scoot. Got fences to mend if I can get the door open. *chuckles*

  18. The Head Camper » Blog Archive » Nereids delayed… sorry, folks. on June 27th, 2006 2:12 pm

[...] Ruthie’s Club just sent me an e-mail letting me know about a problem with the artwork for Nereids. The artist had a major computer crash, and won’t be able to finish the illustration for the first chapter. I had the choice of going with an earlier illustration (which had a problem) or delaying publication. I chose to delay, since I want the illustrations to reflect my vision of the story. [...]

Wow; love your site and the stories. reading Onegerians “stormy Monday”, the teen suicide part hits close to home. Its scary as is teens dying like Beth in “rewind” . this stuff is real and you people incoparate it in your stories. this is a service and should raise awareness about some REAL SHIT that our youth are facing. “now that is too young”
Jack should step back , reread some of these stories and chill out, or if incapable of that then “get a fuckin’ life” .
    Nick “dude” you are awesome.

  20. Roy M on June 28th, 2006 11:05 pm

I love your SC stories, and I patiently await every forthcoming book in the series. Moreover, I am not mendacious.

  21. Richard R on June 29th, 2006 10:23 am

I’m with Adune. I’ve read the forum, but not often as the threads can be overwhelming. I’m not on the mailing list since my email comes through my employer. I had no idea Nereids existed until this blog entry, but after the updates on the website I certainly wasn’t going to ask.

Thanks for the update, I’ll be happy whenever any of your work is available. Thanks for the free ice cream.

  22. Tony on July 4th, 2006 11:46 pm

All I can say is that your stories are fantastic and the idiots that complain just need to get a life. Keep up the good work

  23. Eric on July 6th, 2006 5:09 pm

    Nick-
Your writing is well worth the wait. Take your time (not too much) and massage the story until it reads as you had intended. Reading your works is a genuine pleasure. The story flows and develops naturally. This is the exception today in the computer world and you deserve to be proud of the work you have published for our mutual enjoyment.

As far as the impatient morons who rant and rage on about how you owe them the story and you misled them, they are the misguided. Quality survives, garbage dies. Your works are written to endure. I for one, will wait patiently. You will know when the stories are ready to be released.

One last note to Jack the blog idiot—You only have one chance to make a first impression. I commend you on succeeding to confirm what a fool you truely are.

  24. DocWilco on July 9th, 2006 8:43 am

I do not read your forums, as I have enough forums to keep abreast of, so I just regularly check your RSS feed for new things. Totally missed any mention of Nereids.

I’m very stoked to hear about it though. I’ve read just about anything you’ve published on your site, and I really like your writing style.

As for the fuckwit, there’s just no excuse. I feel ashamed that any fellow fan would act in such a manner. Real fans grumble, how could they not, being hooked as they are, but they keep that to themselves, realizing that any grumbling they do will just distract their supplier of good things. Quality takes time, and it’s the quality that a real fan wants.

And about the NYT Bestsellers list, you’ve mentioned something like Summer Camp can’t be published, due to the content, so I won’t be looking for your prose in my local crack dealer’s outlet (the American Book Center, the biggest english-only bookstore here in the Netherlands). But have you considered a) self-publishing hardcopy, and b) writing non-erotic stories.

As much as I’ve started reading your stuff because I found it on ASSTR, I no longer read them just for the erotic side of things. I bet any kind of story or plot could turn into something that sweeps the reader away when you write it.

  25. mr rob on July 9th, 2006 12:33 pm

Been reading SC since you posted the last chapter of B3. I got in late in the game… I’m a big fan now and can’t wait till the next one comes out. I’m probably going to pay off Ruthies to read Nereids ahead of the free stuff.
Also wanted to let you know that I’ve never been much of a romantic. My wife and I spiced up our love life with candles etc… But after reading SC and your other stories, I got a real passion for making love to my wife. She’s grateful, and has even asked where all the attention to detail in our life has come from. I haven’t told her yet, but I think I’m going to just open B1 and let her start reading.
I’m pretty sure she’ll love it.
Thanks dude, and don’t hurry on anyone’s account. Just get it right. That’s what counts.

  26. Wanderer on July 14th, 2006 1:02 pm

Is it possible to track down this worthless slime Jack smith ? How he can start to slam one of the best FREE authors on the net for making us wait, is beyond me. Some people are only alive because it’s against the law to kill them. Would it be possible too write in the name Jack smith and have character butt raped, legs and arms broken, and later fed to the pigs whilst still semi alive. I think that would be a fitting end.

Nick, you take your sweet time about it. We know that it will be worth the wait.

    wanderer.

Many many thanks from a loyal follower.

Wow, did you ever just bring back a bunch of memories. Having lived that era of Nam including 2 tours early on, cant wait to see how you handle this one.. Life changed for us all in those few short years..

To quote the sig line of another favorite net.erotica author Friar Dave:

It doesn’t actually *take* all kinds, we just *have* all kinds.

  29. Larry on July 28th, 2006 7:39 pm

Like a few of the posters on this blog, I am a little impatient with the start of Book 4 being delayed, once again. However, It has just made me find some more authors and try some of the other stories out there. However, if the wait goes on for too much longer, my list of authors to watch for, may grow so large, that I might not have time to read everything. Please, no more delays.

  30. Nick Scipio on July 28th, 2006 7:55 pm

If you don’t like the “delays,” you’re welcome to a full refund.

I too was completely entrapped by Summer Camp… I have been waiting for the final instalment and can’t wait until you get it done. I am looking forward to reading Nereids.

As for the offensive idiot above, isn’t it interesting how some people just don’t know how to write without profanity…. He is simply illiterate and an idiot!

  34. Clive on August 11th, 2006 1:42 am

    Nick,
I have just finished reading “Kendall”. I thoroughly enjoyed all three of you books so far and I await with growing excitement for “Christie”. I would also love to read a reverse novel written by Gina which tells the story from her perspective. That way we would get to find out if she really got screwed by Rod on the trip to Vermont.

  35. John on August 24th, 2006 8:44 am

Anticipation can be both a delight and a terror. Some of my favourite authors write serial novels and when I finish one I await the next, wondering, will it be as good as the ones I have already read or will it be a letdown after the brilliance that has gone before? And so it is with the next Summer Camp episode. Given the quality that has already come I would be shocked if the next chapter was anything less than enthralling. Keep up the good work! I just can’t help wondering if there is a spoiler in the title.

  36. JayG on August 26th, 2006 12:33 am

    Clive;
check out the extras and crossover stories.
see be287 and “dealing with the devil”. be287 has taken up the vermont ski trip from a third person view. fills some big holes. these are all done with nicks blessings. also read Stricklands stories, very well done.
