I’m in the mood for a melody…

I’m in the writing mood. (So what am I doing writing in my blog? Keep reading.)

I just spent the last three hours doing a complete edit on Nereids, Ch12. I pared it down to 10,822 words, but it’s already larger than most of the previous chapters. I still have one major scene to write (the climax… ;-), as well as a short epilogue. I cut out quite a bit, though—about 1,000 words.

I know how the final scene is going to go—now I need to transition to it. Believe it or not, that’s harder than it sounds. The story needs to flow smoothly, with the passage of time evident but not belabored. It takes a bit of creativity to manage (natch). Ask a writer… most will agree.

Anyway, I thought I’d update the blog with my progress. I haven’t had much time to write since July 4th, but I’ve accomplished a lot in the time I have had. So I have that going for me, which is good (it’s not total consciousness, but I’ve never caddied for the Lama*).

I still have 4,000-5,000 words to write, though, along with all the editing that comes with it. I should be able to get most of it done in 3-4 writing sessions, 2 if I’m lucky… and if I have the time. That’s my most precious commodity these days: time. And it’s the major reason I release stories slower than before.

Summer Camp - Book 1 was a mad dash, and I spoiled a lot of readers, unfortunately. Even Book 2’s pace burned me out, eventually. Book 3 was better, obviously, once I told the insistent idiots to fuck off (fortunately, they were a minority… a demanding and insensitive minority, but a minority nonetheless).

Luckily (for me and you both), I’m a lot less reluctant to disappoint people with my schedule. After all, you can sheer a sheep many times, but you can eat it only once. Personally, I like wool sweaters more than mutton. You know?

So, that’s the story for today. I’m downloading the song in the post title**, since my copy has a hiccup in it. I plan to load the album onto my iPod and relax for a while.

* Bonus points for anyone who knows what movie that comes from. It’s one of my favorites.

** More bonus points if you know the song and album. Another of my favorites. (Evidently, I’m having an Eighties day.)

Amusingly, the Lama will be here on Sept. 17th. If you want a caddying job, I’m sure I can fix you up. ;)

Also, that song was used the local record store ad for a long time. So I can’t get the commercial out of my head (and no, I’m not going to do the googling for the bonus points).

That song would have been Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” from the album of the same name.

BTW… I don’t think the Lama grants you total consciousness until the moment of your death. I’d have held out for a tip.

Actually, Bruce, I think it was Robert Plant, “In the Mood” from The Principle of Moments album.

    Movie: Caddyshack, maybe?

Song: Robert Plant’s vocals for sure… something about The Honeydrippers comes to mind. Don’t remember if that’s who he recorded it as, or the name of the album…

    Oh, good grief!
Robert Plant; “The Principle of Moments”; Track 2: “In the Mood”. 1983.

Not quite the same as the Glen Miller tune of the same name… ;)
The movie is definitely “Caddyshack”, from 1980.

Ed… My mistake, but I was close. No bonus points for me, but perhaps I can get “Honorable Mention”.

“Sing us a song, you’re the piano man
    sing us a song tonight
Well, we’re all in the mood for a melody
And you’ve got us feelin’ alright”

    Cavedog,

Yeah, I’ll give you an honorable mention for that one.
