Two good days in a row?
Wow, whoodathunkit?
I had two quiet days at work, and I used the time wisely. Yesterday was a “go home late ’cause I lost track of time while writing” day, and today was an “edit what I wrote yesterday and then crank out another 1-2,000 words” day.
Between yesterday and today, I wrote more than a third of Ch1. Add that to the half-plus that I’d already written, and I’m pretty happy with how it’s shaping up. I’ll probably cut 10% or so when I do a polishing pass, but I don’t think I’ll nuke more than the usual knots and burrs.
In other news, I sent the prologue off to my team last night, and they’ve been sending back their comments. It’s good to get back into the swing of things.
I don’t know if I’ll have the entirety of Ch1 ready for my Dec. 31 deadline, but I’ll definitely post the prologue, if nothing else. Besides, the prologue is what you all will talk about the most, so it can serve as the chum for the Ch1 feeding frenzy.
I still want to get a comfortable buffer of chapters under my belt before I begin post on my regular every-three-week-ish schedule, but we’ll see how long that takes. With more days like today and yesterday, it shouldn’t take long at all. Cross your fingers.
Fortunately, my business partner and I decided to close the office from Christmas to New Year’s. So I’ll be home all that week, with nothing to do but play with my new toys and write. (That’s not entirely true, of course, since I have a family, grandkids, friends, etc. But I’ll certainly have more time than if I were in the office.)
In any event, that’s the latest update. B4-Ch1 currently stands at 11,089 words (which includes my standard headers and disclaimer text). That’s probably healthy enough to stand alone as a chapter, but I have a few more things I need to include. I have a stopping point in my mind—a natural break in the story line—and I need to get to that in 1,000 words or so. It shouldn’t be a problem.
Thanks for all the great comments on the last post (and thanks for your patience). Thanks for reading, too.

Nick, you’re an optimist. This is Christmas/New Year, so I personally doubt there’ll be much time for writing - there’s a family out there, they come first.
Post what you want, when you want. You know we’ll be ready and waiting for it!
Hey, that being home for the week between the holidays sounds nice…. Here’s to hoping that you don’t get the dreaded honey-do list and you might get something done on the story…..
You post em if/when you want to. The Dec. 31st deadline is entirely in your mind only and of your own expectations only. Your readers are in debt to you, not the other way around. We will eagerly be awaiting your work but that is our burden and not yours!
Make sure you take time to relax and do those things you’ve been meaning to do for yourself too. Above all else, have a very merry christmas and happy new years!
Nick, Merry Christmas to you, your family and the Grandkids. I know as a grandfather myself I cannot find enough time for the five of them as I have to travell to Ottawa to see two of my grandsons. To hell with the Dec 31st deadline it is a figment of your mindset to appease your innerself. We who appreciate your writing skills and efforts can well afford to wait until early 2007 what with NERIDS rolling out. I know BK4 will be well worth waiting for. Again have a great time with the family and friends over Christmas and have a toast to 2007 for continued health for 2007. Best to you and all concerned, your Canadian reader and supporter.
I agree with the others. My first post to your blog. SC has been a GREAT pleasure to read, look at, enjoy, etc. I write small stuff myself and I love watching and reading how you weave a plot line and a story arc.
Heck, I’ve been playing out B4 in my own head every since I finished 3, and re-read 1,2,3, and read them agian and again, working out my own ideas so I can match up to what you end up doing!! Talk about fun!!
Post when YOU want. Heck, Nerids is keeping me quite happy!!
I’m a fan. I’ll wait for as long as it takes
The concensus seems to be, and I agree, You write at your own pace and post on your time line. As said, family comes first. I, too, am a grandfather and sometimes find I run out of time. You write and post when possible and I’ll read when you get them posted. I just appreciate your stories and will patiently wait for any postings.
Thanks much.
Nick,
Wishing you and yours a very MERRY CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR…love your stories…and like the rest.i look forward to your stories…always wait patiently for your postings…so take your time …enjoy the holidays….Evie
Been reading your stories for a year now,and enjoy your writing. I also am a grandfather and great grandfather. have a merry xmas and new year.
I have re-read the previous books and you will be pushing yourself and editing staff to get ch.1 by New Year’s Eve. Just one question Nick is Christy going to jump around as when Kendall eneded Paul was just finishing his freshman year of a 5 yr program or are you planning on adding extra books?
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Have to agree with the others, forget about the Dec 31st deadline for chapter 1.
On the other hand, if by chance the team gets the prolog back to you in time….it would make a nice Christmas present to your readers
Have a Merry Christmas and Happy new Year!
The wait will be worth it regardless of time. Good imagery takes time and your charachters come to life with every word.
Merry Christmas Nick to you and your family.
I eagerley look forward to our gift in the new year (book 4). Thanks for all of the good reading that you have already given us.
Dan
Oh how I envy you your ability to write and write and write. I read you stories and everything seems to flow so easily together. I am a 65 year old grandfather of 11. It is difficult for me to explain how much I enjoy your writings. Have a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Richard
Nick, I totally agree with the others. If you meet your own deadline then cool. If not, then we will certainly read, enjoy, and appreciate it just as much when you do post. You and Gina Marie Wiley are my two favorite authors of all time. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and keep up the most excellent work
take your time we do not want you to make a mistake or something from trying to get done to fast happy holidays.
Nick, Your self-imposed deadline is approaching. Excitement is building. Please know we look forward to your efforts and appreciate your hard work.
And to echo everyone else’s sentiments, take your time. We will be here ready to read whenever the story is complete.
