The chum is in the water

As promised… It’s 2006, and I just posted the first part of Book 4: Christy. It’s the Prologue only, but that’s what most of you will analyze (and over-analyze) anyway.

If you feel the need to make a snarky comment about deadlines, let me give you a piece of advice: don’t. Even if you think you’re offering a “friendly joke,” don’t do it.

Writing is a lot of hard work—ask anyone who’s done it. I spent the holidays working on B4, more for your enjoyment than my own. I took time away from my family, friends, and relaxation. So if you’re tempted to “joke” about my posting schedule, deadline, or anything else, ask yourself how much work you did for me this holiday season. If the answer is 20+ hours, then feel free to give me a hard time. If not…

I really am sorry that a small group of passive-aggressive assholes have ruined my faith in basic human decency. But I get into a snit when some jackass sends me a snide comment, thinking he’s being “funny.” It completely wrecks my creative drive, and makes me want to invent a device to stab people in the face over the internet.

In any event, enough chest-thumping.

You can only read the Prologue on my web site. I won’t post it to SOL or any of the other usual places till later (when? I don’t know). After all, there has to be some reward for subscribing to the Forum or my mailing list.

Thanks for reading my rant. The vast majority of my readers are fantastic people, patient and appreciative. It’s just the 0.1% that drives me bat-shit crazy. (If anyone already has a device to stab people in the face over the internet, please contact me privately. ;-)

Happy New Year,
- Nick

great job. just enough to wet the appetite. take all the time you need to get the story ready. those dumb asses who complain about your pace should stick it where the sun don’t shine and try to do better. keep up the great work.

    Nick,

    Excellent, as always!

I think I speak for a great many of us when I say we look forward to when you are able to share more of the story with us, but understand that it takes time to put out a quality product. We would rather read the quality, even if it means we need to wait a while.

  4. aaron on December 31st, 2006 1:26 am

just to contribute to the 99.9% — thank you for your efforts. i suppose every creative endeavor requires a lot from artist, but i always feel that writing is the most intense. but maybe i’m just not very good at it, so i respect it all the more. best wishes for you and yours in the new year.

  5. Mark on December 31st, 2006 1:28 am

Nick, please remember that there are those of us who cherish books and pay quite a lot for them who appreciate that the only cost incurred in reading your wonderful writings is time.

Your work is very much appreciated!

If you need me, I’ll be in my workshop. That stabbing thing is a GREAT idea…

Happy New Year, Nick! May 2007 be a great year for you. Thanks for all your hard work and thanks for sharing it with us!

  8. Spitfire on December 31st, 2006 2:30 am

    Nick,

Here’s some more support from the 99.9%. Deadlines only matter in newspapers and senior projects. :) You’re doing a better job than the majority of erotic writers out there, you’re free to read, you keep us posted on your progress, and you’re ALWAYS worth waiting for…asshats who don’t know enough to appreciate all of that can go take a long walk off a short pier. And on a more personal note, the release of B4, the book covering Paul’s last years in college, is coinciding perfectly with my own last year in college, so as far as I’m concerned you’re right on time. :) Thanks so much for all your efforts. Happy New Year!

P.S. Nereids was awesome. Enough said.

With my wacky job hours I found the prolog posted just after 12 AM
EST Dec. 31, 2006 just as Nick said early Sunday.
    Thanks Nick!
I feel like a kid with a new toy on Christmas morning that can’t wait
to open more gifts, but I will have to wait until more are given by
Nick in the way of more postings.

Names, names, names. Fun fun fun. Let the debate begin. I am almost ready to copy all of the present day posts and place them all in one item. Then make a list of people you loaned out to other stories and make a nice list. In anycase thanks for the post not that I was expecting you to even make the self impossed deadline. Yeep thats right I didnt think you would even post it, and just let that .1% gripe over free stuff. I am always appreciative of anything free. I learned a saying called TINSTAAFL. Which means there is no such thing as a free lunch and that means whenever they say something is free somebody will have to pay for that free item when it gets down to it. For us and your awesome writing it happened to be over 20hrs of your time and your staff that went over this since christmas. I am not so sure if thats a price I would want to pay for a free story post.

Keep up the good work, just remember that the large amount of appreciation of your work far out ways the small number of idiots who drive us all mad!!!

  12. Rev on December 31st, 2006 6:43 am

Many others here have said it already, but everyone should say it. “Thank You” You have a rare gift, and the fact that you share it with us makes you a truly wonderful, amazing, and delightful person. You take yor time. When you have hurried in the past writng, it has shone, and I would rather you took your time, enjoy your writing, and produced the masterpiece you want to share with us, Rather than shoving something out for the assholes. You are a wonderful writer, and we are all lucky that you choose to share your gift with us. Again, “Thank you”.

Nick thank you for your time and dedication to your story. I think your story…is the key phrase right now….you do want you want and we will just have to take it. We all wish you happy and merry new years…and may it be a healthy and happy one for all of your fans…

    Hi, Nick –

Wow! Now my mind is reeling with the possibilities for B4. Reading the Prologue (and re-reading the Prologues for the other books) has been a real teaser! Great read …

Nereids is wonderful: just finished reading, it as well. Fills in some details I had been wondering about. You have a great eye for detail.

    Thanks for your awesome writing!

    Happy New Year,

    Hey man

Been reading your stuff for a while now and just wanted to say excellent work. And I don’t mean just the erotica part but the whole and complete story line. You have a defendant talent for writing and developing a story. I don’t know what you do for a living but you should be writing and being published with the gift you have.

To bad about the azz’s that rag on you but I will say I check your site and blog regularly looking and waiting patently for more. And I must add you have me addicted to your writing.

  19. Darbingle on December 31st, 2006 11:27 am

    Cool beans Nickster!

  20. George on December 31st, 2006 11:35 am

Thanks for the start, you met your self imposed deadline, and unless you work for a publication that pays you to write, your only deadline is the one you set 3 seconds before posting. Some of us miss the stories (me included), but most of us are smart enough to realize that you do this for fun and ultimately must set a scheduld that fits your life. I will be patient. Keep up the good writing.
    George

  21. John Adams on December 31st, 2006 12:49 pm

    Nick,
Let me add my accolades to those already heaped on your more than deserving shoulders. Outstanding work from an outstanding talent. I would be one of the first in line to purchase any book you decided to write and have published in the mainstream world. Please ignore the small minds that simply cannot grasp the enormity of your talent. Their comments simply amplify their lack of intellect and understanding.
    Best in the New Year,

What a wonderful way to usher in the new year! Thanks for posting the Prologue, Nick. This one I’m going to actually read in serialized form (I read the first two in their full-book PDF form, and waited for you to release SC3 in that same format before reading it). You’ve definitely got my wheels turning as to who the funeral is for, though I think you dropped at least one good hint in the Prologue.

Thanks again, and happy New Year!

  23. Grizz on December 31st, 2006 6:23 pm

Hey, I love all your stories so far, and its a great thing that you’re willing to write for people without much to show for it. Don’t worry about those other people who don’t have patience. It builds to a greater suspense. You’re an awesome author who knows how to write. I personally wouldn’t mind buying a published copy of your books so that way I could read them anytime I wanted(since I’m a bookworm and not a computer person). Keep up the great work and don’t worry about any deadlines. Just gotta keep it cool man.
    Have a great New Year

sorry no internet face stabbing device but a heartfelt thank you for all the wonderful work you do and for the amazing folks you fill your stories with. It makes the wait as you craft the next chapters well worth it and the time when the next bit does come out all the more enjoyable.
thanks for all you do at no commerical gain but simply for the love of writing and sharing it with us inspite of the stress and hassles and pain the ass people that feel entitled to your work instead of grateful for you sharing it freely as they should.

  42. Kyle on January 3rd, 2007 9:13 am

    Hi Nick,

Don’t kid us. You’re writing this for you, not for us, because you’ve got something to say and enough of an ego to think that what you’re saying is worth other people’s time.

I wish I could claim this bit of snarky wisdom, but I can’t — it’s what Harlan Ellison said about writers a few years ago, and he’s right.

In short, if the demons hadn’t driven you to the keyboard you’d have been happy to take time off with the family. But they did and it’s our benefit. So keep up the good work and have a happy and productive 2007!

    Kyle

PS — what’s become of that photographer character of yours?

  43. gary hein on January 3rd, 2007 1:48 pm

I like the Prologue and the Nereids. The Nereids filled in a void area and I suspect having read it will be helpful for the new journey on which you are leading us.

  54. tspin46 on January 6th, 2007 7:31 pm

I tend to like to read stories in big blocks. I didn’t discover Summer Camp until almost the end of Book 2. It was a pleasure to read a complete Book 1 and Book 2 straight through. Book 3 I followed chapter by chapter, I felt delicious anticipation, but I liked reading the full story straight through better. I probably will check back in July or August for my fix, if I can restrain myself from just a quick peek earlier.

  56. amber on January 7th, 2007 9:50 pm

I’d just like to agree with pretty much everything everyone else has said and add my own two cents. I’m a (frustrated) novelist, and I can’t imagine putting in the time and effort it must take to create a world like the SC universe and publish it for free…to write something as extensive as these books (’cause that’s what they are) must take AT LEAST as much time as your full-time job. I know I’ve been writing pretty seriously, trying to create a novel as interesting as those about SC for almost seven years now and I’ve come nowhere near the word count you have…I just want you to know from one writer to another, how much your work is appreciated. Please ignore the idiots who are acting like children; those of us who actually care are more than willing to wait for quality work, rather than have rushed, less-than-stellar stories. Thanks a million.

  57. Richard on January 8th, 2007 1:40 am

I have a poster on my wall. It was from the ’60’s, it looks like a Pfiffer drawing of a man at a typewriter. Underneath it reads:

    I don’t say anything

  62. Winston on January 10th, 2007 12:57 pm

    Hey Nick,

I have edited two complete stories for authors at SOL, and both have credited me to be the master of the comma, as neither has a clue.

However, I have been surpassed in your reply to JoMamma. He is indeed a whiny cunt.

Even the best plot, characters, and descriptions become gibberish if proper punctuation is not applied. Your attention to detail shows throughout your stories, and yes, indeed, I can see all the hours in your work.

I know you could sluff it off, and still present a pretty good story. But you wouldn’t be Nick if you did that.

    “God is in the details”

Thanks for the stories, and the polishing to make them great.

  63. dude-ish on January 14th, 2007 10:48 am

  65. Manta on January 14th, 2007 3:35 pm

An old television commercial comes to mind… It was for Jimmy Dean sausage (perhaps some might remember it’s message): “I’d a whole lot rather explain the price, than apologize for the quality.”

In this context, I’d rather know how much hard work Nick’s putting into this for us, than end up with less than his best. And we all know how great his best is!

Keep it up, Nick! You’re a God! ;-)

  66. Ned on January 15th, 2007 1:36 pm

Oh, wow, some people just don’t get it.

This is Nick’s story. He’s doing the work. He’s letting us read for free. He’s paying for hosting so we can read it on the ‘net.

He can decide when (and if) he’s going to post.

I do have issues with waiting, I’m hyperimpatient, but that’s my problem. I want book four right now, but it doesn’t belong to me.

It belongs to him. It’s his.

That’s it. Period. End of story.

  67. Gyrofx on January 16th, 2007 2:51 am

I take it that Joe doesn’t think much of Nick’s stories. This begs the question, why is he posting blog entries on a web site that he clearly has no interest in?

Come let us speculate… feel free to add ..

    1. Joe’s mamma still likes to dress joe up in diapers. …
    2. Joe’s wife can’t get enough of the swinging world and therefore Joe blames Nick….
    3. Joe loves attention, but can only find it by posting flames on blogs, in real life nobody knows Joe exists.
    4. Joe at the age of 45 finally grew testicles and thinks it’s pretty cool..

  68. sw on January 16th, 2007 5:16 am

    5. Joe is bored and wants to get into an argument.

Ignore. It’s the internet. People act like a dick because they can’t in real life.

  69. Ned on January 16th, 2007 12:19 pm

    6. Joe thinks that society “owes” him.

Nick is doing the work, it belongs to him, and he can publish, or not, whenever he likes.

  70. J Smith on January 16th, 2007 5:02 pm

Joe if we are “kissing his ass” it is because we are intelligent enough to realize that if we act like dicks Nick might just stop writing. You might understand if you could get past the letter M on the Alphabet.

As it is you clearly don’t understand how hard it is to write 5 (counting Neredies) complete books in less than 5 years. Some authors who get paid come out with a book every 5 years at least we don’t have to wait that long you ignorant fuck.

The only things Nick gets out this is pride for completeing it and our praise. So a little politeness only seems to be in order

  71. James L Brainard on February 18th, 2007 8:26 am

Sory, I’m sure you said somewhere, but where did you post Chap 4, Christy?
