I love Wren!
Just a quick update, since I haven’t posted in a while. (I have a good excuse, of course, but the Great Server Adventure of ‘07 is fodder for a whole post by itself.)
In any event, I’m up way past my bedtime. I’ve been writing for what seemed like thirty minutes, but was closer to two hours. Actually, I think I sat down a little after 11pm, so it’s been more like two hours and twenty minutes. But I digress.
What, you ask, has me so wrapped up that I lost track of time? Why, Wren, of course!
I’ve been waiting to write this scene for weeks now. I’ve been writing and re-writing in my head, adding and cutting, refining and expanding. The scene (get ready for the tease) is Wren’s birthday, and I’m smiling as I think about it. I just started it, but Wren and Paul are so much fun to write that I simply can’t wait.
Unfortunately, I have to wait. It’s almost 1:30am, and I should’ve been in bed an hour ago. As it stands, this blog post will take another twenty or thirty minutes to write and edit. So I won’t make it to bed till almost 2am. And then I’ll have to unwind. Long story short (too late?), it’ll be 2:30am before I get to sleep.
Ah, well. It was worth it. Did I mention how much I love Wren? She’s a dream character to write, fun and full of life, teasing and mischievous, sexy and seductive, all rolled into one adorable package.
You’ll see what I mean when you read Chapter 2, and again when you read what I’m writing now, in Chapter 5.
On that note, I sent Chapter 2 off to my editor yesterday. Look for it in a week or so. I sent Chapter 4 to the reality team today, so things are moving along.
(It’s amazing what I can accomplish when I don’t have a server giving me fits. But I digress… again.)
For now, you’ll have to content yourself with my usual teasing. Sorry. Maybe there’s a bit of me in Wren after all.
- Nick

As Someone who is dealing with a crashed server at 1:00 in the morning Central time at this very moment, I can relate! Grats Nick on overcoming your obstacles. Please send the good vibes to Kansas for the rest of us! (Not Scipio, Kansas; Wichita, Kansas
) Can’t wait to see what you’ve written! Wren is one of my favorite characters. Everytime she interacts with Paul I have to smile. Thanks for writing, and for teasing!

Wren. Well *Hmmmm*
Note that it doesn’t hurt that the model you’ve chosen to represent her is *attractive*. Seriously.
So you’re up to the 21st August then? Now, if only we knew *which* 21st August. It would give us some idea as to the pacing…
-Steve.
I think Wren is definetly one of the most intriguing characters. She has had my interest piqued since Paul first met her.
I have to admit I adore Wren too. She’s a lot like me as far as her personality goes. It’s amazing how I can see different people in my life like the characters in the book. I guess there’s always a little bit of our characters in all of us (cause Nick is DEFINATELY a tease…not that that’s a bad thing though
)
Nick,
I know what late nights are like, so you have my sympathy there. But like me, I’m sure once you get started on something, it’s hard to stop.
I appreciate the work you do in your writing.
Many Thanks
Nick,
While I sympathize for your lack of sleep, the selfish part of me absolutely adores Wren, and can’t wait to see what mischief she has been up to! Your writing definitely touches people in mysterious ways, so it doesn’t surprise me that it affects you similarly. Hopefully, you’ll find that it’s all worth it in the end - but at a minimum, it has created quite a following of adoring fans. I am just happy to be one of them. Thanks for all you do!
I am grateful for Your Fool’s day gift of a chapter!
I just finished with the birthday celebrations of my daughter (24), and she really was born on the 1st of April
Thanks and no more server adventures to You, as they are too stressful for older people like me!

Nick,
As a design/construction reality team of one I just had to say well done on chapter 2. The atmosphere and competition on the construction site is right on. My first job at 15 was helping an uncle remodel and restore an old house…being an on site neice was tough on the workers but my larning curve was steep…and the lessons took… Paul’s will too. By the way.. I did get the design job in Franklin..following in Paul’s footsteps… Hugs, Leah
Chapter 2 is excellent !!!
The plot (and theme?) thicken.
Patience (at my end) is such a testing experience.
Definitely nice to ’see’ the character of Wren being built up (while on the other hand slowly setting the stage for a change in the girlfriend status of Paul and Trip).
Also good work on defining Paul’s experiences on the jobsite.
Keep up the good work.
I really can relate to the feeling of regret and pain over lost loves. I can also relate to how Paul put off writing back to Gina, even though he should have done so immediately. Sometimes it is just too painful to deal with life. I am hoping Paul is learning how to be proactive instead of reactive in all areas of life.
Chapter two was definately worth the wait.
